Work resumes on developing the field off Parsonage Way

The Parish Council are pleased to announce that the development of the field off Parsonage Way, adjoining the main A57 into community parkland has resumed after a pause in work in March due to the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown restrictions.

Great Sankey Parish Council are working with Warrington Borough Council to improve the drainage, install a new front boundary fence, create better access with a new entrance and pathway. Landscaping will include a perimeter hedge of Sweet Briar Rose and Western Red Cedar; this will add colour and attract wildlife to the park. An avenue of trees will border the new pathway, which will create a welcoming arrival into the parkland. Colour and scent will be added by further planting near the entrance/along the pathway.

Once the groundwork has been completed the field will open as community parkland for local residents to enjoy. The planting will happen in phases throughout the year.

Warrington West Support Groups Join Forces

The Covid 19 Community Volunteer Support Group for Penketh and Great Sankey operating from Hood Manor Community Centre, Raikes Close and Penketh Boys’ Club, Honiton Way,  are pleased to announce that they have joined forces with the Westbrook Volunteer Group. This is operating from the Seven Woods Pub, Westbrook Crescent, and is also being supported by St Philips Church Westbrook as part of Warrington West Church Group.

The joining together has been made possible as a result of a successful application for grant funding from the Cheshire Community Foundation, which was submitted by St Philips Church to cover the three Parishes and enhance mutual support. This will help to maximise efforts to identify and support elderly and vulnerable members of the respective communities.

Councillor Amanda King Great Sankey South who is managing the Hood Manor site said

I am delighted we are able to do this as it will mean we are better able to ensure that all elderly and vulnerable members of our communities receive the essential support and reassurance they require at this testing time.

Councillor King stated that a further example of this was liaison with local Care Homes has revealed that several residents are in isolation within their rooms, they are not able to eat solid food. The homes need a supply of soft sugary foods which can be easily swallowed. The groups were in the process of assessing the demand for this help and looking to provide any necessary assistance which may be required

Councillor Alex Abbey Burtonwood and Winwick added that support in the form of donations from the local community and business has been superb, however this grant funding means the community efforts can continue as it is not known when normal living will return and additional cases of need are being identified every day.

Objection to St Helens Council’s plans to extend Omega on green belt land

Great Sankey Parish Council wishes to inform Great Sankey residents that they have lodged an objection to plans to the extension of the Omega site in a westerly direction onto greenbelt land in Bold. Access to the development will be via the existing Omega roads network.

Proposals have been submitted by applicants Omega St Helens Ltd/TJ Morris (Home Bargains) to St Helens Council’s planning Department to open up an area of green belt land to the west of Omega South, south of the M62. The application has been submitted on the basis of the needs of the applicant who also claims that it will assist both St Helens and Warrington Councils to meet their objectives for increasing employment opportunities as outlined in their respective draft local plans. The application has two elements, the first to build the warehouse/offices already proposed for Home Bargains with a further outline application for additional warehouses at a later date which will be subject of further application. The Home Bargains application includes on-site parking for 576 vehicles and loading facilities for 383 HGV’s.

Peter Watson, Chairman of Great Sankey Parish Council said “Over recent years, the Parish Council have regularly been made aware of residents’ concerns regarding traffic problems, particularly HGVs using residential roads. The Council believes that the volume of additional traffic generated by this development will be to the absolute detriment of our community. We have regularly made Warrington Council aware of these concerns.’’

This development of Omega West is only mentioned briefly in both Councils’ draft local plans. The Parish Council received no formal notification from St Helens of the application despite previous written requests to be included in consultative processes. The objections have been lodged on the basis of insufficient detail in the local plans, inadequate traffic management and the use of Green Belt Land

Peter Watson added “The full documentation is only accessible on St Helens Council website under reference P/2020/0061/HYBR and comments must be submitted online. It is hoped that despite the short notice, residents will be able to support us by also lodging their comments in opposition.’’

Deadline for comments is 19th February 2020
